01LISTEN TO GIRLS
Ask girls what they want, what gets in the way and what would make them want to stay. Build sport with them, not simply for them.
1.3 million girls who once loved sport drop out as teenagers. Puberty, periods, judgement, confidence, safety and fewer opportunities can all change how sport feels. We're asking youth sport to change with girls, so they can keep playing, competing and belonging.
WHY THIS MATTERS
This isn’t a problem belonging to one country or one sport.
WHO research involving 1.6 million adolescents found a gender gap in physical activity across almost every country studied.
Sport is only one part of that picture. But evidence from different countries shows the same pressures appearing again and again. Confidence. Judgement. Cost. Safety. Access. Social support. Body image. Opportunity.
Girls aren’t one group with one reason for leaving. But the gap is global.
THE BELIEF
ADOLESCENCE SHOULD NOT MEAN THE END OF SPORT.
Feel accepted in sport.
Feel able to take part.
Have somewhere to play.
THE PROBLEM
THE REASONS DIFFER.
TOO MANY ENVIRONMENTS
DON'T CHANGE WITH THEM.
Girls can become more conscious of how they look, how capable they feel and how others see them. Fear of judgement and comparison can make sport feel less comfortable as they get older.
Periods, changing bodies, clothing, privacy and physical discomfort can create new barriers that didn't exist when they were younger.
Friends, family, coaches, access, cost and the sporting environment all influence whether girls feel supported enough to keep showing up.
WHAT WE’RE ASKING FOR
There is no single reason girls step away from sport. Their experiences differ by country, culture, community and circumstance. But international research repeatedly points to the environment around them. Youth sport can do something about that.
Ask girls what they want, what gets in the way and what would make them want to stay. Build sport with them, not simply for them.
Bodies, confidence, relationships and priorities change as girls grow. Sport needs to recognise those changes rather than expecting the same environment to keep working.
Create environments where girls can learn, compete, make mistakes and be themselves without constantly worrying about judgement, appearance or whether they fit in.
Cost, facilities, safety, transport, scheduling and access can decide who gets to participate. Opportunity only matters when girls can actually reach it.
